Sunday, May 22, 2005 wa.... Holidays??? where got holidays????? A lot of time? where got a lot of time??? It's really exasperating to realise that 3 months of holidays don't exactly add up to three months. All my slots in june and july has been taken up!!!! yet at the same time, it's exciting to know that holidays will not be a time vegetating or wasting away. Good good. It's gonna be adventurous!! will post photos of my Indonesia trip, if i get to come back to Singapore, that is. =) had a good time of fellowship with some church friends today over how we are gonna keep our focus during hols. And then someone exhorted us: What are we gonna do with our lives?? true true... it's rather sad to ask yourself at the end of the journey "what have i done?" and then to realise you have been wrong in your direction all the while.. gasp.... So i must decide now now now..... Those vegetating like me... decide!!! Leng Xiuying Karen at 5/22/2005 09:49:00 PM
Thursday, May 19, 2005 now this is one cool poem i encountered this semester, by Gerard Manley Hopkins. Well let's jsut say that he writes a lot about God and glorification, coming from a Jesuit background "As Kingfishers Catch Fire, Dragonflies Draw Flame" As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies dráw fláme; As tumbled over rim in roundy wells Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell's Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name; Each mortal thing does one thing and the same: Deals out that being indoors each one dwells; Selves--goes itself; myself it speaks and spells, Crying Whát I do is me: for that I came. Í say móre: the just man justices; Kéeps gráce: thát keeps all his goings graces; Acts in God's eye what in God's eye he is-- Chríst--for Christ plays in ten thousand places, Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his To the Father through the features of men's faces. u can check this out to understand it a bit better http://www.sparknotes.com/poetry/hopkins/section5.rhtml Leng Xiuying Karen at 5/19/2005 02:06:00 AM
Just saw an advertisement on a documentary discussing the ignorance of youths regarding in regards to sexuality. Teen sex on the rise... Girl throws baby down building... April fools' joke turned out more than just a joke... Whatever happened to youths these days??? I only recalled falling asleep in class (hope teachers are not reading this!) and probably a few friendship problems here and there, coupled with hanging downtown if i ever got upset. hmm.. tt was all the teenage angst i could think of. Why this far for others? Somehow it must have triggered a synapse somewhere.. I vaguely recall having written a cheesy essay on the importance of sex education. Ah sec 3... it was the first disgusting argumentative essay ever! Yesh yesh cheesy things like it's important to inform about the risks and dangers of abortion, that parents must assume responsibility for the right education at the right age etc... schools more open to talk and educate about such issues etc.. yadiyadiya It's strange that such fuddy-duddy ideas never seem to be outdated. In fact, all the more these things must be in place. Where in the world did these measures go to? You mean people have not known enough to udnerstand the consequences of such actions??? This talkative cab driver i met today was so chatty i felt i had to oblige, wasn't too successful with my one-syllable monotone answers that resulted in these responses : "Wow, ah---jay--cee ah.. very gd school. My daughter last time from hwa chong", "so you got boyfriend or not", "yeah yeah now ah concentrate on your studies first" But there was a point he made... (Taxi drivers actually have a lot of insight on social issues) he recounted about this lady passenger a few days ago who is working as a petrol kiosk cashier, previously at a lounge, have 2 kids old enough to attend kindergarten and the best part - She's 22. Doesn't take a genius to know when she had her first kid. That's the way things turned out. Was the girl just the victim of her parents' actions? And will her kids in future walk the same path? While i still live on a bank account that comes close to zilch sometimes (thank God for timely provisions=)), i still believe it is actually possible to break out of this cycle. The parent probably won't be rich enough to afford piano lessons and things of the like, but at least a decent education can come out of it as long u pay the school fees, plus choose to stay in the right environment which promote healthy relationships, teach simple values of honesty, integrity.. And i dare say that if the kid goes to school at least, does his work to his best ability, learns his skills, he actually can be useful in society. How true it is that the decisions of this generation will affect many more generations to come... If only they will choose to stop making the kind of decisions that keep them at status quo..
