Friday, April 28, 2006 2 down... 1 more to go... I'm enjoying days like this studying for exams. They are in short a pig's life: 7 - 9 am Quiet time, newspaper, breakfast, check mail 9-11 study 11-12 sleep 12-1 study 1-2 lunch 2-4 study 4-5 sleep/tuition 5-7 study 7-8 TV 8-11 study 11-1 winding down, bed time. I will miss days like this after exams.... But there's a time for everything... Compared to UROPS and normal semesters, exams are honeymoon periods for me, in terms of rest. And God still works in my inability and slowness of understanding, even during exams. I praise Him for giving me the understanding. yay.... especially in immunology lectures. Thank you Lord... Of course.... You created this immune system... You know everything, much more than my lecturers who drowned us with neverending immuno lectures. If i think my lecturers are "powderful" in dealing with this area of ever-changing knowledge, You already have all the answers in the beginning Leng Xiuying Karen at 4/28/2006 12:02:00 AM
Thursday, April 27, 2006 Spoke over the phone with a sister who is deeply concerned over the scores of people who have taken exceptional interest in the texts and literature of today that shakes the foundations of Christianity. Gospel of Judas... Da Vinci code... Wow... as what crusade materials have mentioned (paraphrased): never has there been such an opportunity and avenue as wide as this to be able to talk about God so freely and openly and have people actually listen. Came fresh from watching "The Gospel according to Judas" on Nat Geog. Must say it was really interesting and offered "alternative viewpoints" that seem debatable. Or perhaps my prejudice in insisting that the Bible i'm reading and believing now is real, so i was really wary and listened intently to what the documentary had to offer counter to what i'm reading and believing. But all i got out of the whole documentary was this: 1. They found the manuscript in Egypt. 2. It was a hard time trying to get people to start verifiying its historicity. 3. Some people did some radioactive carbon dating on it, and verified that it's a true record dating back to about 200 AD 4. It discusses the alternative perspective from what i know by showing contents of the manuscript acted out, and this part, formed the main bulk of the documentary. So at best, i think the documentary only fleshed out some radioactive cardon dating process (tried to hype it with some impressive images) and spent a REALLY long time describing its content in narrative style. There seem to be a lack of serious questioning and intense investigation into its authencity. The only intense investigation i really saw was, quite diappointingly, the radioactive carbon dating, but that only tells us how long this manuscript has been existing. Nothing more. Finally, the question of whether it's believable was still left hanging, and "the gospel according to judas" was just a representation of how history is to be treated. I choose to see the process of investigation into this "gospel" as a metaphor of how history is to investigated, verified and proven authentic. "The Gospel according to Judas" however, has not met up these stringent requirements. Those in favour of using it to turn the tables against Christianity would have to wait (in vain as of now). Having said this, being hyped up in the controversy of whether Judas was victimized would only serve to draw us away from the REAl issue we have to deal with - our broken personal state as a result of sin. Many a times, we are so prone to hopping on the bandwagon in discussing such controversies we forgot to examine our lives and see the brokenness of it that has resulted from living lives our own way. Could controversies like this than be a diversion and escapist mentality to draw ourselves away from facing up to the need to deal with sin in our personal lives. This is not about Christianity. This is about how we are inherentlyly sinful and need someone larger than ourselves to save us out of this trouble. This someone larger than ourselves we call as our God. (of course, He is able to transcend the limitations of Man, that's why He's God) Till we learn to face up to this issue of sin squarely, our hearts will constantly be wanting rest, but not finding any. Personally, i still believe that the Bible is God's inspired Word. Men and women of honour and integrity has lived by it and walked in it. They had a close relationship with God that cannot be counterfeit. It is sufficient for me to believe. Leng Xiuying Karen at 4/27/2006 11:22:00 PM

Sunday, April 16, 2006 Today is a very special day for me in sealing my commitment to Christ as shown through the outward expression of baptism. I've waited and pined for this day for so long, finally to stand at the beach, looking out to the waters to know that in there i will immerse and bury my old life together with Christ in his death and emerge to identify with Christ in his resurrection. The moment of going to die was nothing magical, but sober, serious, with the weight of knowledge that my old life must go. Yet there is an anticipation to know what comes after the old life has gone- new life in Christ. The joy of knowing i walk in newness of life is unbelievable. How ugly i came up dripping wet, squinting without specs, with no means of "let's-tidy-ourselves-up" kind of things. But it didnt really matter... My commitment now sealed, my destination now set. I am new in Christ and now again. The elation that wells up right from the heart beats any happiness i've ever felt in a long time. This physical act come and go. Now at the position of post-baptism, there is nothing mystical, magical or surreal... What comes after is the daily grind of the every today. I pray i may stand the test of time and finish this race to meet with Him. now, to celebrate what happened 3 days after He died: Because He Lives God sent His son They called Him Jesus He came to love, heal and forgive He gave His life to buy my pardon An empty grave is there to proof My Saviour lives And because He lives I can face tomorrow Because He lives All fear is gone And because I know, yes I know He holds the future And life is worth the living Just because He live Life still goes on.. but not without Him. =) Onward with my term exams!
